The Neva River is the only outlet from Lake Ladoga, and it flows westward to the Baltic Sea. It was an important trade route and strategic battleground for many centuries. The Russian city of St. Petersburg was founded in 1703 on the islands of the Neva delta, and quickly grew to be one of the most important cities in Europe.
