Altai Trip Summary Return to Rachel's page

Where is the Altai Republic?

The Altai Mountain Range runs from SW Siberia (in Russia) southeastward into China and Mongolia. The Altai Republic, which is part of the Russian Federation, occupies the northwestern part of the range. It is bounded on the west by Kazakhstan. The altitude in the valleys ranges from 3000-5000 feet, and the tallest mountain, Belukha, is 14,700 feet high. The region is extremely dry, and the Chuisky Steppe is treeless due to permafrost, but there are taiga forests of larch, Siberian pine, and birch trees on many of the lower slopes.
